Malaysian B-L-U-E-S
Boredom is slowly setting in... Kuala Berang is a town barren of nightlife. There is no where to go to meet people. No bar, no movie theater, no bowling alley, no minature golf course... haha, as you can see, I'm getting desperate. I was complaining to my roommate Zairu about this last night and he just laughed. He moved here 9 months ago, so he has already adjusted. We decided to go for a drive and I saw a horrible event. A cat got hit by a car and lost its poor little head!! As if seeing that man the other day wasn't enough, I had to watch Fluffy die a horrible death too. Its body was like a balloon full of air. When you let go of the balloon it goes flying everywhere as the air escapes, thanks to pressure. Well, when the cats head fell off it went zipping across the ground and hopping into the sky as its blood shot out everywhere. Sorry to be vivid, but you didn't have to watch it.
Zairu is going to take me to Kuala Terengganu soon so we can go play snooker and pool at an all night pool hall. I went last weekend with some other friends and it was pretty entertaining. This weekend all the students are going home and my roommate is going to KT for a conference. That equals me sitting alone in a house that smells like cow dung because of the rubber factory across the street, all by my lonesome... I need to find an escape.
I went to Tasik Kenyir the other weekend but I forgot my camera and have no pics. It was GORGEOUS!!! It is the largest man made lake in all of Asia and it has thousands of islands. We stayed on a remote island with nothing but a resort... it was complete isolation but I loved every minute. I went swimming in a massive waterfall, Air Terjun Lasir, and just hung out with mother nature. I did some kayaking too, and a TON of eating. It was a great weekend.
Alright, life is still good here, just a little uneventful lately. I hate being sluggish and boring, but sometimes it just happens. Next week is spring break, so at least I have that to look forward too!

hey buddy! its jen! whats your address??? ill send you some love from france!
Hey Zach,
Suggestion: next time you come around to KL, get some board games, for you to play with your students at home. That's nothing like clubbing or an Xbox, but provides some form to entertainment when it gets bad. :) A Nintendo DS or PSP should also make time pass faster. I know it works for Ash and me.
Sorry to hear about the cat. I'd be quite shaken to see something like that happen.
Hey GURRRRRL!
Zach, I've been a blog-reading free-loader myself and haven't posted anything on your blog, but I am reading it! Like you said, both of us teaching English in the BFM, we gotta stick together!
I hear you on the lack of nightlife. San Juan del Río is not exactly the night hot spot either, and when I hang out with people from here, it sort of reminds me of my high school days when we had nothing better to do than go to Meijer at 2am. But nonetheless, we're getting that cultural experience and all that crap.
Man, I am still not over how much I miss OU. I'll never forget joining you guys on B-dubs Tuesday karioki night. Those were the days.
Write me sometime, chooch.
xoxo,
Rachel
I is spring and summer the whole year through in Malaysia, ya?
Orang Barat,
I've been tracking your movements via your blog.
Cut the scatty toilet references! Consider yourself warned!
Your recent post from Jalan Putih brought back a surge of memories from my year in Indonesia (Medan, 89-90). I, too, played Boo Radley, accompanied by the roaches and geckos and well-meaning peepers. Our mosque, directly across the street, was the largest in Sumatra, with the tinniest, rattiest prayer-call speakers as well. I lived in a converted annex of a children's library, with a sit-down flusher, but no cooking facilities, (had a tiffin box brought round daily). No TV, either.
I look back with horror at all the faux-pas I commited, but am nonetheless thankful, because I learned from them. I'm trying not to commit the same mistakes again as I grow and blossom in Japan.
By the way, I'm on the 4th floor of a late-70s era apt. building whose earthquake security is in question. I consume an occasional sake or two for protection. Alcohol is banned in your parts, right? How the hell are you managing? Brownies?
Oh, keep posting those marvelous photos

Selamat Hari Raya! Sampai jumpa,
